Redirect strategy: 1:1 mapping, not wildcards
The most common migration failure is lazy redirect strategy:
- Redirect all old URLs to homepage (kills organic traffic)
- Use wildcard redirects without validation (creates redirect loops)
- Assume “similar content” is close enough (Google does not agree)
The right way: 1:1 redirect mapping
- Export every indexed URL from Google Search Console or sitemap
- Map old URL to new URL — exact match, not “homepage for everything”
- Validate redirects before launch (use Screaming Frog or Sitebulb to crawl staging)

A redesign is a chance to improve technical performance, not just match the old site.

- Submit new sitemap to Google Search Console within 24 hours of launch
- Monitor index coverage daily for 30 days (watch for new 404s, redirect chains, crawl errors)

- Check Core Web Vitals — LCP under 2.5s, FID under 100ms, CLS under 0.1 (especially on capability and product pages)
